Rise Of The Filoni

Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck candidates to succeed Kathleen Kennedy

Apparently, chief creative officer Dave Filoni and head of development Carrie Beck are the current go-to choices inside Disney to be the next co-presidents of Lucasfilm, after Kathleen Kennedy departs.

It is still far from official, but it is the latest nugget in the ever-developing story. It was originally reported in February that Kennedy would be leaving as the head of the studio at the end of the year or beginning of 2026, even if she’d stay on as a producer on future Star Wars movies, some of which are currently in development (the new trilogy by Simon Kinberg would be a good example of this).

A story by The Hollywood Reporter from back then had already positioned Dave Filoni as the main candidate to take the position, but it had mentioned that he was likely not to be the only one with the title. Beck seemed like a good fit, and her promotion at the end of 2023 always looked like a move in that direction. Still, there was some speculation that there could be an outside candidate under consideration.

The time of Kennedy’s departure still remains uncertain. She told Deadline back in February that an exit announcement was “months or a year down the road”. A recent report saying she would leave in August was struck down, so it seems like she will likely stay until the fall, at least. And it would make sense, as the company is currently preparing a new feature film to go into production, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling.

Carrie Beck has been a long-time collaborator of Dave Filoni’s, executive-producing his animated series and also the live-action series Ahsoka. She’s also been a co-producer on the MandoVerse series, among others. source

Disney to cuts several hundred jobs

The layoffs have affected staff in the following areas across the world: marketing for film and television, TV publicity, casting and development, and corporate financial operations. While team sizes are being reduced, with individual employees affected, no entire team is being eliminated.

These redundancy plans were announced in September last year and are the latest step in CEO Bob Iger’s plans to cut 7,000 jobs at Disney as part of a strategic realignment. Deadline reports that this is part of a plan to push for streaming and profitability. Considering the many reports that Disney Plus shows struggle to break the Nielsen Top 10 on a regular basis, it remains to be seen how making marketing and publicity staff redundant will help their streaming platform achieve these goals.

It’s unclear how this affects Star Wars specifically, though it doesn’t appear that this round of redundancies will affect creatives this time and all previously announced projects should be expected to continue, including Ahsoka Season 2 and The Mandalorian and Grogu, which are out next year, as well as Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter movie starring Ryan Gosling.

However, considering the first season of Ahsoka had underwhelming viewing figures and even Andor‘s impressive figures struggled to justify that series’ huge budget, it would seem that these cuts will only make it harder to promote Star Wars films and series to audiences that otherwise wouldn’t know or think about watching a new Star Wars product.

Even if Disney are confident that these cuts won’t affect their ability to market and promote their own products, it is still deeply saddening that yet more people’s livelihoods have been taken from them, and we can only hope they land on their feet with more stable employers. source

The High Republic: Trials of the Jedi

Publishers summary

In this epic conclusion to Star Wars: The High Republic, the Jedi face a final confrontation against the Nihil and Marchion Ro.

The Force is everything. A single life connected to all life. All things connected to all other things. This is what the Jedi believe, and this is why they fight. For life…and the light.

For too long, the light has been threatened by Marchion Ro, a sinister despot who will stop at nothing in his quest for power. The conflict with Ro and his marauding Nihil forces has left scars across the galaxy and held the Republic hostage. Countless lives have been lost, beacons of hope have fallen, and the collective courage and resolve of the Republic have been tested like never before. Through it all the Jedi Order has endured, an unwavering candle against the encroaching darkness.

But the Jedi have yet to solve the mystery of the Nameless creatures who feed on the Force. Ro has loosed them upon the galaxy, striking fear into the heart of even the most stalwart Jedi. And yet with every life saved and world freed from Nihil control, the all-consuming blight, which devours everything wherever it appears, threatens to wipe it all away.

Everything now depends on nine brave Jedi, led by Avar Kriss and Elzar Mann, who embark on a treacherous journey to the Nameless homeworld. Their quest: to finally solve the mystery of the Nameless and their connection to the Force, and to stop the blight before its damage becomes irreversible.

But a final confrontation with Marchion Ro awaits. Ro, who is willing to sacrifice everything he's achieved to secure a final victory against the Jedi and carve his name into the very stars for all time.

Nothing less than the fate of everything, perhaps even the Force itself, is at stake.
